Have you been to a friend’s house and noticed how beautiful and personal their home looked because they had family portraits decorating it? Did it leave you feeling a bit envious? I remember feeling this way many years ago before I got into photography.
Portraits are a great way to add a personal touch to your home, and they don’t have to be confined to the same old spots on the wall. In fact, there are plenty of spaces you might not have thought of that could be perfect for hanging a portrait and make really nice wall decor.
Let’s talk about some ideas for creative and unexpected places to decorate with wall art in your home that you may not have considered.

If you have a space above the cabinets in your kitchen, you can hang a portrait there. This might seem strange at first, but it can look really good. Also, it seems that whenever people get together in a home, they all congregate in the kitchen, so this is a great way to showcase your portraits.
Sometimes we overlook hallways, but they can be a great spot to hang portraits. You can even put a series of portraits in the hallway to create a gallery wall. There are so many different layouts you can do. Gallery wrapped canvases and metal wall art are perfect for this.
How about the staircase? You can hang portraits going up the stairs, or down the stairs if you’re going downstairs into your basement, or even on the outside of your stairs in the triangular wall the stairs create. We did this in our home until we put a shelving unit in that spot.
Think about using the space on the wall above a door or window. Yes, I know this one sounds a little crazy. We have a sunroom and put multiple portraits above the sliding glass door to our deck and also above the windows. I love it and our guests get to enjoy them too since that’s where our dining room table is when we host dinner parties.
There is always a place to hang some portraits in your home. Your photographer can help you come up with even more ideas that are specific to your home.
